Job Description:

The Department of Engineering & Technology (E&T) at Southern Utah University invites applications for a non-tenure track, full-time Lecturer. The role of this position is to support the educational mission of the E&T Department in providing high-quality instruction in mechanical engineering topics. The successful candidate for this position will be expected to teach courses in the mechanical engineering undergraduate program curricula and assist managing engineering laboratories.

The department is seeking a faculty member with a strong interest in teaching and skill sets that complement the current faculty and needs of the programs. The successful candidate should have expertise in one or more of the following areas: mechatronics, manufacturing, and thermal sciences but candidates with other areas of related experience may also be considered.

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach a broad range of undergraduate courses in the discipline area of mechanical engineering. The department is committed to offering a high-quality educational experience for students. Teaching responsibilities may include but are not limited to undergraduate courses in the following areas: core engineering courses such as statics, dynamics and fluids, as well as specialized courses related to mechatronics, manufacturing, and thermal science.

  • Assist managing engineering laboratories, including maintenance and preparation of labs related to courses and managing/working with student lab assistants.

  • Fulfil department assessment duties related to continuous improvement efforts and ABET accreditation review documentation.

  • Bring mechanical engineering professional/industry expertise and technologies to our growing programs.

  • Develop and design curriculum plans to foster student learning, stimulate class discussions, and ensure student engagement.

  • Participate in departmental discussions and decisions related to the content, learning outcomes, and pedagogy in the programs.

  • Mentor and advise students.

Minimum qualifications

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications.

  1. A Master's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field.

  2. An ability to teach introductory mechanics courses such as statics, dynamics, strength of materials, etc.

  3. Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal relationship skills.

  4. Commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate engineering students as evidenced by the applicant's teaching statement.

  5. An ability to manage engineering labs by building lab experiments, maintaining lab equipment and consumable supplies, implementing safety protocols, and supervising student lab assistants.

Desired qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with the following qualifications.

  1. A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. Candidates with a Ph.D. in Engineering Education with the technical background to teach in mechanical engineering are encouraged to apply.

  2. A background in manufacturing, mechatronics, or thermal sciences.

  3. Teaching experience with demonstrated accomplishment at the undergraduate level.

  4. Hands-on experience with safety and/or personnel management.
