Job Description:

The Scenery Director oversees all activities of the Scenery and Paint Departments for USF. The Director is responsible for the safe and efficient planning, execution and completion of all scenic elements for productions and events at the Utah Shakespeare Festival. The Scenery Director, in conjunction with the Production Manager, recruits and hires all staff, manages budgets and coordinates schedules within the Scenery and Paint Departments, including Run Crew. The Scenery Director, with the SUU Theatre Arts and Dance Department, maintains equipment and performance spaces while protecting the Utah Shakespeare Festival interests during the off-season.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Adheres to all SUU and USF policies and procedures.
2. Oversee planning, execution, completion, installation and strike of all scenic elements for productions and events of the Utah Shakespeare Festival.
3. In conjunction with Production Manager, prepares annual budgets for scenic areas with breakdowns for various activities.
4. In conjunction with the Production Manager, directs recruiting and hiring of scenic and paint staff.
5. Represents USF at theatre conferences throughout the country for recruiting/hiring purposes.
6. Serves as liaison between directors, designers, technical directors and charge artists to complete scenery and meet the needs of the productions.
7. Communicates with designers on resources and budgets available for their productions.
8. Articulates scenic engineering needs to the designers and production staff.
9. Oversees daily operation of all scenic and paint areas.
10. Directs the purchasing and record keeping of all scenic materials in coordination with the Festival Business office.
11. Coordinates with Properties, Paints, and Electrics crews on the build schedule and production needs.
12. Manages employees: Technical Directors, Carpenters, Charge Scenic Artists, Scenic Artists, Deck Carpenters, and Run Crew.
13. Attends all production, department, and staff meetings. Attends technical rehearsals as needed.
14. In conjunction with Facilities, Production heads, and SUU stakeholders maintain, repair, replace, and upgrade equipment, shop spaces, and theatres.
15. Maintains stock of supplies and equipment.
16. Liaison with SUU Theatre Arts and Dance Department regarding facilities and equipment usage and availability of scenic equipment for non-USF productions.
17. Responsible for all requests/rentals of scenery department assets during off-season.
18. Ensures policies and operations for a safe, healthy, inclusive, and clean workplace are followed.
19. Perform other duties as assigned and agreed upon with the Production Manager.


Education and Experience Requirements:

Minimum Requirements-

1. Bachelor's degree in theatre or related field.
2. Three - five years professional experience as a technical theatre manager.
3. Knowledge of safe theatrical rigging techniques including the use of chain motors.
4. Knowledge of construction techniques for wood, steel, foam, plastic and other common materials used in theatrical scenery.
5. Knowledge of common scenic art techniques and materials.
6. Knowledge of machinery for the stage, including automated systems.
7. Understanding of strength of materials and static structural analysis.
8. Proficient in AutoCAD drafting software and Microsoft office suite software.
9. Ability to develop detailed labor and materials budgets, maintain and process financial records according to policy and practices of USF, and successfully work within approved expense budget limits.
10. Ability to collaborate with designers, directors, production department heads, and managing professional crews.
11. Must be able to work with numerous simultaneous deadlines.
12. Possess a valid driver's license, or ability to obtain one.


Preferred Requirements:

1. MFA in Technical Theater.
2. Strong written, verbal and presentational skills.
3. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
4. Experience with repertory theatre construction techniques and connection methods.
5. Experience with Creative Conner's Automation system.
6. Experience with generating computer files for CNC machinery.
7. Completion of OSHA 30 for General Industry or Construction.
8. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds. Must be able to work at heights in lifts and on ladders.
