Job Description:

Under the direction of the Child Development Area Supervisor, the Teacher along with the Teaching team, is responsible for the classroom operation, including individualized lesson planning using Teaching Strategies curriculum, implementation of activities to support the lesson plan, maintaining a safe classroom environment, and supervising up to 20 children to keep them safe.

Teachers conduct parent/teacher conferences, home visits and supervise classroom volunteers. Teachers are responsible to work with parents and the Teaching team daily, to plan and implement an individualized curriculum for 3 to 5-year-old children in the Head Start classroom. The successful candidate will work in partnership with other teachers, and full-time advocates to build a positive relationship with the families.

This is a 35 hour per week position with benefits.


Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Supports parents in their role as prime educators of their child by building an engaged trusting relationship.

2. Demonstrates and models good health, nutrition, safety, and positive discipline practices.

3. Provides a positive classroom environment and supports the specific needs of children who come to Head Start. Assist parents with additional support for their child if concerns are observed.

4. Responsible for the overall physical setup and day-to-day classroom management components required by the Heat Start program.

5. Responsible for following USDA and Head Start guidelines.

6. Responsible for planning and implementing Creative Curriculum into the classroom, monitors the child's development using the TS Gold Assessment tool and uses the data to guide individualized planning.

7. Responsible to complete screenings, assessments, and evaluations on children, results recorded accurately and reviewed with parents in a timely manner.

8. Coordinates with the family advocate on parent committee meetings, attends and presents classroom updates and parent training on the curriculum.

9. Maintains all classroom inventory by cleaning and regular disinfecting, proper storage of toys and equipment both inside the classroom and on the playgrounds, and completes an annual inventory log.

10. Attends and implements all required training and participates in professional development opportunities.

11. Performs all other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience Requirements:

1. A Bachelor's Degree in early childhood education or a bachelor's degree in a related field with coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education is strongly preferred.

2. An Associate's Degree in early childhood education or related areas with early childhood classes with a willingness to work towards a bachelor's degree is required.

3. The ability to speak and write both English and Spanish is strongly preferred.

4. Experience working with preschool children required.

5. Must demonstrate adequate health to do the job. The successful candidate must be able to lift 40 pounds, carry it for 50 feet, and be able to sit on the carpet and get back up without assistance.

6. Must be willing to work effectively in a team with agency representatives, parents, specialists, family advocates, and other professionals to meet the needs of the children and families.

7. Must maintain current CPR and First Aid certifications, and food handler's permit, blood borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals exposure, and preventing sexual harassment trainings are required.

8. Must support the Head Start Performance Standards, the SUU Head Start Mission, Head Start policies and procedures and the SUU Head Start Code of Conduct.

9. Acts in the best interest of SUU Head Start and Southern Utah University at all times.

10. Employment is conditional pending results of a pre-employment physical exam and TB test, and approval of the Head Start Policy Council.

11. Must be able to pass a background check with the BCI database and not have a record of substantiated child abuse or any other crimes against the vulnerable population.
