About SUMA:

Southern Utah Museum of Art, on the campus of Southern Utah University, features the artwork of regional artists known for their landscapes, faculty and student artists from the SUU Department of Art & Design, as well as emerging and distinguished artists from around the country. Strengths of the nearly 2,000-object permanent collection include the body of work by Jimmie F. Jones that exemplifies his notable career in the region, as well as a robust collection of prints featuring well-known artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Salvador DalĂ­, Katsushika Hokusai, Thomas Hart Benton, and others. Since 2019, a number of gifts and acquisitions have focused on photography such as Brett Weston, Gary Edward Adams, and a portfolio called DE | MARCATION: A Survey of Contemporary Photography in Utah. Named the best-designed museum in Utah by Architectural Digest, SUMA's building was designed by Brooks + Scarpa and inspired by the region's famed slot canyons.

General Summary:

Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Operations & Outreach, the Coordinator of Learning & Engagement is responsible for all aspects of educational programming and community outreach that prioritizes K12 learning, SUU student engagement, and adult programs. This position will align objectives and outcomes as they relate to the museum's strategic plan and support the mission of the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Foundation.

The Coordinator of Learning & Engagement is expected to maintain an appropriately high standard of professionalism, and will work collegially and cooperatively with senior members of the staff, team leads, support staff, and other stakeholders.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develop, evaluate, and manage k-12 learning, curriculum, tours and outreach, in consultation with the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Endowed Chair in Elementary Arts Education, the
    Assistant Professor of Art Education in the SUU Department of Art & Design, and educators in the
    community
  2. Work with team associates on the planning and implementation of Teen Art Camp.
  3. Develop and implement programming for SUU students with a focus on the Sidekicks Membership Program and museum visits.
  4. Work with Campus Partners to stock the art pantry and engage campus through tours by connecting exhibitions or collections to university curriculum.
  5. Develop and coordinate community programming with a focus on experiential learning accessible to all ages.
  6. Serve as the liaison for the museum's campus and community partners.

Management & Administration:

  1. Act as Team Lead to supervise support staff.
  2. Attend meetings as needed.
  3. Assist in the management of the department's budget.
  4. Assist with the planning and implementation of professional development and team building activities through staff meetings and retreats.
  5. Organize and maintain documents.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree in art, art history, art education, museum studies, or related field.
  2. Experience with K-12 curriculum is required.
  3. Experience with university students and faculty is preferred.
  4. Experience with project management.
  5. Writing skills.
  6. Comfortable with public speaking.
  7. Ability to work some nights and weekends.
