Job Description:

Responsible for effective custodial maintenance of all assigned facilities to provide a safe, functional, and pleasant environment for the campus community.


Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Hire, train, mentor, and supervise student employees.

2. Comply with safety codes and policies and complete all required training. Serve as essential personnel during emergencies. Assist with egress from facilities and campus, and any other duties as assigned by the custodial supervisor during an emergency.

3. Clear snow from all entrances and stairs leading directly to buildings.

4. Lock and unlock windows and doors, and assist with providing security to facilities as applicable.

5. Maintain equipment in good working condition and oversee general cleaning supplies.

6. Clean and re-lamp light fixtures; dispose of waste and litter; wash walls, woodwork, and windows; restock paper products and soap in clean restrooms.

7. Vacuum and shampoo carpets and rugs; sweep, mop, refinish various types of floors with correct and compatible products.

8. Assist with furniture moving and event set-up per reservation requests.

9. Report and/or coordinate needed repairs to Facilities Management. Submit work orders when necessary.

10. Ensures compliance with safe work practices as outlined by campus standards and OSHA regulations.

11. Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by the Manager of Custodial Services.


Working Conditions:

1. Work indoors or out, in all seasons, often in industrial settings typical to a higher education setting.

2. Must be able to work overhead and in confined conditions and work from ladders, scaffolding, and elevated platforms, as required

3. Must be able to respond to after-hours emergencies and reside within 20 minutes of SUU for emergency response.

4. Travel in a university vehicle as required, sometimes overnight.

5. Must be able to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of the university.

6. Work with cleaning chemicals.


Experience Requirements:

1. Two years of experience performing custodial functions in a supervisory capacity.

2. Experience performing custodial equipment maintenance, preferred.

3. Outstanding customer service experience.

4. Proven ability to complete tasks and assignments with dedication, using ethical behavior.

5. Proven outstanding work ethic demonstrated through previous employment or schooling.


Education Requirements:

1. High school diploma or equivalent GED.

2. Training or experience in the related field.

3. Knowledge of State and Federal regulations applicable to the area of responsibility.

4. Demonstrated leadership qualities, strong human relations abilities, and excellent oral and written communication skills.

5. Working knowledge of computer programs related to the position.

6. Interaction with:

a. Campus Community

b. Vendors & Contractors

c. Community Organizations

7. Must be willing to attend training and receive certifications related to the position.

8. Must have the ability to communicate clearly in English, both written and verbal, with Facilities Management staff regarding critical information, shift occurrences, work orders, problems, upcoming needs, and tasks beyond the individual's scope and capability.

9. Must present a neat, professional appearance with clothing appropriate to work assignments.

10. Must have a current Utah Driver's License.
